At STACS, we believe in grooming talents — fresh graduates, interns, professionals, and even veterans. For every individual here at STACS, any experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned outside of a professional setting, is a valuable one. As we are nearing towards the end of June, it marks the end of a 6-month internship for Tan Yi Xian (‘Yi Xian’), our Software Engineer intern.

STACS Software Engineering Intern, Tan Yi Xian

Currently a student in National University of Singapore, Yi Xian specializes in Computer Science and Business. Beside his curriculum, he has also attended a course on React Native, a Mobile Application Development.

STACS had the pleasure of recruiting young talents in the realm of Engineering, especially a motivated individual like Yi Xian. Through his daily interactions, Yi Xian has consistently provided fresh perspectives on the brainstorming sessions, business, strategies, and plans. Even though his attachment with us is temporary, the team spirit he has displayed along the way has been heartening. We had a short Q&A session with him to find out more about his story and experience here at STACS.

[STACS]: Hi Yi Xian, can you share with us your current role in STACS?

[YX]: I am a Software Engineer intern at STACS. I have the role of a full-stack developer. I am given the opportunity to work on the front and back-end code for various applications and prototypes.

[STACS]: How has your experience in STACS been so far?

[YX]: My experience so far has been very enjoyable. Not only have I gained many technical skills, but I have also made friends and discovered the unique working culture in a Start-Up/ Scale-Up. STACS has allowed me to understand how various teams and departments of the company work together closely towards a unified goal.

[STACS]: What are your key takeaways from the internship?

[YX]: All the takeaways from this internship are very valuable to me and it is hard to streamline into just one!

Technical skills are one of them — learning coding languages such as JavaScript and Java, using frameworks such as Spring Boot and numerous libraries to represent, store, manipulate, and display data and services that deploy websites for clients to use.

I was also involved in active learnings such as the Agile software development cycle, good coding practices, and how to co-work with other software engineers on the same task.

Interestingly, STACS’ fortnightly training sessions are where I have learnt and understood more about IoT, Blockchain technology, and the green landscape in Singapore — which I think is incredibly useful and beneficial for any Engineering professional.

Lastly, I have personally learnt a lot (both soft and hard skills) from our Co-Founder and Managing Director, Benjamin, who shared with us how tech solutions could solve the existing pain points and business challenges faced by financial institutions.

[STACS]: Any challenges you met during the internship?

[YX]: The learning curve was very steep at the beginning due to my lack of coding experience. However, the team has been very supportive and is always willing to lend a helping hand. A lot of emphasis was placed on learning. Through that, I have acquired many relevant skillsets. Within the first two months of guidance, I was able to solve bugs and create new modules without many blockers.

[STACS]: What is most memorable to you from this internship?

[YX]: I find the mealtimes where we talk about our experiences, laugh, and joke around the most memorable. The people here at STACS are friendly, warm, and always willing to lend a helping hand when I am facing difficulties in my work. The friendships that I have built, are the most memorable.

[STACS]: How will your experience at STACS pivot your career(s) in the future?

[YX]: The technical skills that I have acquired at STACS gives me an edge in the FinTech space. These skills allow me to pick up essential information and the know-hows of application lifecycle management of software and work effectively alongside other developers. As an intern, I have experienced the daily challenges faced by developers and the product team when it comes to aligning technical feasibilities, and user interface of various products. These invaluable experiences allow me to exercise better judgement and employ real life application in my future career.

[STACS]: Any advice for your fellow interns?

[YX]: It is important to keep an open mind; to learn new things and not shy away from help. Afterall, everybody is learning together!

It has been an immense pleasure to have had Yi Xian be part of the team. We would like to offer a big thank you to Yi Xian for the passion and tenacity that he has portrayed during his stint here at STACS. All the best in your future endeavours, Yi Xian!
